How to choose an AI companion app
An AI companion is a fictional chat partner powered by software. Choosing one starts with the kind of conversation you want: a playful exchange over lunch, a shared story, or an ongoing chat you return to after work.
Spend your first few conversations checking whether you enjoy the replies. A character's profile gets your attention. The conversation has to keep it.
What do you want to come back for?
Use the same question when you compare apps. You'll notice differences faster than you will by reading another feature list.
| Your reason for opening the app | Try this | Pay attention to |
|---|---|---|
| A quick, funny conversation | "Defend a food opinion you know I'll disagree with." | Does the reply give you something interesting to answer? |
| Getting to know one character | Mention a harmless preference, then return to it later. | Does the character use the right detail without inventing a story about you? |
| Making up a story together | "We're opening a terrible restaurant. You choose the name; I'll choose the menu." | Does the character leave room for your choices? |
| A calm end to the day | "Ask me about the best part of today. Keep it casual." | Does the tone stay comfortable, or turn into a speech? |

If you already know the personality you enjoy, browse SpiceMatch companions and choose a profile that gives you something to talk about.
Give the conversation a fair test
Start with a real interest. A favorite film or an unfinished weekend plan gives the character more to answer than "hey." Then change the subject once. See whether the reply follows you.
Ask for a shorter answer if a message goes on too long. Correct a detail when the character gets it wrong. A useful app should make those ordinary adjustments easy to request.
Come back to the same conversation before deciding. One charming opening line tells you little about the next ten minutes. Our conversation starters include follow-up prompts for when a chat stalls.
Check what memory means
Conversation history is the record of a chat. Memory is the information an app brings into a later reply. Keeping a transcript and recalling the right part of it are different jobs.
A simple test: mention that you prefer a quiet café to a busy bar. Later, ask the character to suggest a place for an imaginary catch-up. Look for the preference in the suggestion. Repeat the test on another visit, and correct mistakes directly.
SpiceMatch keeps separate conversation context for each AI creator. Its relationship memory page explains how preferences and previous conversations inform later chats. That is a useful feature to test with the creator you intend to keep talking to.
Work out the bill you will actually pay
The cheapest advertised plan can be a poor fit if the feature you use most costs extra. Check what the plan includes before comparing its monthly price.
| Charge | What to find before paying |
|---|---|
| Recurring plan | The amount due today, renewal amount and billing interval. |
| Usage credits | Which actions spend credits and what happens when the balance runs out. |
| Optional purchase | The price of that item and whether it is already included in your plan. |
| Trial or introductory offer | When the offer ends and what you will pay afterward. |

Pick a spending limit for the month. Start with the plan that covers your usual conversations; buy extras when you have a specific use for them. Check SpiceMatch pricing for the current options.
Look at privacy controls before sharing personal details
Find the app's explanation of stored chats and account deletion. Check whether your profile is public, what other users can see, and how to reach support. Use a unique password and keep sensitive work information out of casual chats.
On SpiceMatch, the data guide and account deletion instructions explain those account controls. Read them before deciding what to share.
AI companions are for conversation and entertainment. Use qualified professionals for medical or mental health care.
Try one companion before choosing a plan
Choose a profile with an interest you share. Send one specific opening message, follow the reply, and return to the same chat later. You'll have a better basis for a purchase than a long list of features you haven't used.
