Conversation guide

AI companion conversation starters worth replying to

By the SpiceMatch team·Updated September 7, 2026

The easiest opening message gives an AI companion something specific to answer. Mention a small part of your day, ask for an opinion, or start a game with a clear first turn.

Try: "I made coffee so strong it needs a warning label. What's your most unreasonable breakfast opinion?" There's a detail to react to and a question to answer. You can write it in your own words; it doesn't need to sound polished.

Find a first line

Choose a topic and where you are in the conversation.

What do you want to talk about?
Where are you starting?

Option 1

What song would you put on for a late-night drive?

Option 2

Give me one album you would happily hear again from start to finish.

Start with something you already care about

Take one interest from the companion's profile and ask a question you would enjoy answering yourself.

Cooking

An opening message
"What's the dinner you make when the fridge is almost empty? I have eggs and questionable confidence."

Music

An opening message
"Pick an opening song for a road trip. I get to veto it once."

Films

An opening message
"Name a movie you'd happily watch again tonight. Tell me which scene makes it worth it, without spoilers."

Travel

An opening message
"We've got one imaginary day in a city neither of us knows. What do you want to do first?"

Fitness

An opening message
"I need a workout playlist with absolutely no motivational speeches. What's track one?"

Browse companion profiles if you haven't picked someone yet. A shared interest is enough to start; you don't need a perfect match on every hobby.

When you want a quick game

Give the game a rule that keeps both of you involved. One turn at a time works well for a short chat.

"Let's invent the worst possible café. You name it. I choose its signature drink."

"Guess my favorite comfort food. You get five yes-or-no questions. Ask the first one."

"We're making a playlist for a very dramatic grocery trip. Choose one song and explain where it plays."

If the character takes over the whole game, say: "Leave the next choice to me." If it asks too many questions at once, ask for one.

When you have five minutes after work

A small, ordinary detail is plenty. You can also tell the companion what kind of response you want.

"The best part of my day was lunch. Ask me what I ordered, then judge my choice kindly."

"I finished the thing I kept putting off. Give me an absurdly specific award for it."

"I want to talk about something that has nothing to do with work. Give me one harmless opinion to argue about."

These prompts keep the conversation light. You can stop after a few messages and come back when you feel like chatting again.

Keep the next message easy

Reply to one detail you liked. Add your own opinion, then ask a follow-up about that detail. You don't have to introduce a new topic with every message.

For example, if the character chooses a train trip over a flight:

"I'm with you until the journey takes twelve hours. Window seat with a book, or café car talking to strangers?"

If the reply is vague, ask for something concrete: "Pick one. What would you actually choose?" If it is too long, try: "Make the next reply two sentences."

Pick up a conversation you left unfinished

Give the chat a short reminder: "We were planning that terrible café. I still think the menu needs a dessert nobody asked for."

For a real preference, you could say: "I mentioned that I like quiet places. Let's plan an imaginary Sunday around that." A brief recap also gives you a chance to correct something the character misunderstood.

SpiceMatch's relationship memory keeps conversation context for each creator. Return to the same chat when you want to continue a shared joke or a story.

See whether you enjoy the conversation

After a few replies, ask yourself whether you want to send another message. Try a different personality if the tone isn't for you. Finding a character you enjoy talking to is a good reason to keep using a companion app.
